Qiangbei Plateau in north-west Tibet is a vast desolate area with few traces of human life, where wildlife enjoys an ideal habitat. An expedition team, conducting research in the Depopulated Zone, concluded that measures to eliminate poachers must be implemented immediately to save dozens of rare species in the area.
As the research team probed deeper into the Depopulated Zone they frequently encountered wild animals including Tibetan gazelles, kiangs, and grey storks.
While observing the graceful dance of black-necked cranes and a group of yellow ducklings, typical of the Tibetan Plateau, they were shocked to find broken horns of Tibetan gazelles.
The hides of Tibetan gazelles are considered valuable, and their horns were used in making traditional medicines. Poachers have penetrated the deepest recesses of the animal reserve, to cash in on the protected creatures. After careful analysis, researchers concluded that the number of Tibetan gazelles is far lower than previously thought.
The Depopulated Zone is the world's major high altitude wildlife habitat. Experts say more rigorous measures must be taken to preserve the wild species in the area, to ensure the diversity and survival of the rare animals.
