Around 40,000 monks and mundane believers, both from home and abroad, attended the opening ceremony of pha spang thang skor festival. peasants and herdsmen performed theatrical items. Besides religious activities, the session also offer entertainments such as horse-racing, yak-racing, tug-of-war, stone-lifting and folk culture performances. Origin of the festival can be traced back to 900 years ago and is celebrated once every 12 years. It was a pure scripture-reciting ritual in its early days. As time goes by, trade fair and performances are added into it.
At am altitude of 4,300m, a grand ritual was held in rwa sgreng monastery. A huge Tangka embroidered with the image of Sakyamuni Buddha was displayed. It kicked up a stir among some ten thousand believers.
