World largest Tangka shown in Beijing When the Great Tangka of Tibetan Art and Culture of China was shown in Beijing between April 18 and June 4, it created a hit in the capital city. The Tangka painting scroll measures 618 meters long and 2.5 meters wide. The 1,500 square meter scroll , the longest of its kind in the world today, weighs some 1,000 kg. The Tangka painting scroll covers the history , culture, folkore and art of the Tibetan race. It tells of the creation of the world, the source of the Tibetan race, lives of various Tubo Kings, life of Sakyamuni (founder of Buddhism),stories of Tibetan Buhhdist sects, people famous in history, Tibetan medicine , astronomy, literature and architecture, plus places of historical interest, festive celebrations, garments, articles of daily use, weapons and asornments. The Tangka painting scroll was created in Longwu Township , Huangnan Tibetan Ethnic Group Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai Province, acording to designs by Zongzhe Lhagyi , a senior artist. After enght years of preparations, Mr. Zongzhe Lhagyi work out his blueprint in 1988, and started to paint two years later." I made slow progress," said Mr . Zongzhe Lhagyi ." If I continued to do it alone, it would take me 500 years to finish it." In 1995,some 400 artists of the Tibetan, Tu, Mongolian and Han ethnic groups from Tibet and Tibetan-inhabited areas in Gansu, Sichuan and Ynunna Provinces gathered in Longwu Township for the same purpose. As a result, the work was completed in four years.
