I welcome this opportunity to send my greetings to Australia-Asia Culture and
Arts Centre and all the participants of the China Tibetan Culture Week. I would
also like to send a special welcome to those who join us directly from Tibet.
It is not often that Australians have the privilege of experiencing the fascinating
and unique Tibetan culture. Many were introduced to it in 1999, during the magnificent
performances of the Tibetan Performing Arts Troupe. This year, a greater collection
of Tibetan culture will be on show during the China Tibetan Culture Week, from
photography to opera and film to medicine. I encourage all Victorians to take
part in this event.
Multicultural festivals such as these are an important
reminder of the diversity that identifies our State. Although the Tibetan community
of Australia is one of our smaller ethnic groups, the Victorian Government recognises
that it has played a leading role in promoting the Buddhist faith. And of coursre,
it has fostered the festive and multicultural spirit of our State by sharing its
culture and traditions on occasions such as these.
I would like to take
this opportunity to commend the work of the Australia-Asia Culture and Arts Centre.
Over the years, it has organised numerous cultural performances that have contributed
to Victoria's multicultural character. This year it has given us a special treat,
the opportunity to savour a week of Tibetan culture, in all its vivacity and splendour.
I wish everyone involed a rewarding experience.
